South African non-hunting activities

South African Hunting Safaris also arrange non-hunting trips and excursions for our clients.

South Africa has a wealth of interesting and historical places to visit and interact with.

Detailed below are just some of the activities available for our non-hunting clients, all within a reasonable driving distance of our ranch.

Please do let us know if you would like to participate in any of these activities during your stay with us. Here at South African Hunting Safaris, we aim to ensure our non-hunting guests have just as much enjoyment as our hunters.

Game Drives

Game is mainly viewed from open high seated trucks. This allows better viewing because of the greater height. A good pair of binoculars is useful for spotting game at a distance. There is an opportunity to see all indigenous species including: rhino, zebra, giraffe, kudu, wildebeest, gemsbok, red hartebeest, and many species of antelope.

Water sports

The slow moving Vaal River which stretches up to 200 metres from bank to bank in most places is the ideal location for such water sports as water skiing, riding in a donut or on a banana. For those not so adventurous why not just relax on the float (a large flat bottomed boat). Take a Braai (BBQ) up the river with a few cool beers, good company and plenty of sunshine, travelling at a leisurely pace taking in the view and the wildlife.

"Big Hole" & Kimberley mine museum.

The Big Hole, the largest man-made hole in the world is 365m deep and covers an area of 15.50 ha. Between 1871 and 1914 14.5 million carats of diamonds were removed from this site. Next to the Big Hole, is an open air museum depicting Kimberley town in it Victorian heyday. The de Beers Hall houses a display of uncut diamonds including the “616” (616 carats) the largest uncut diamond in the world. And the “Eureka” the first diamond discovered in South Africa.

Bultfontein Mine

This is still an operational mine. Surface and underground trips are available. The tour takes half a day. There are instructional videos on diamond mining, the history of the Kimberley diamond fields, and security instructions are shown. Finally the group enters a cage elevator and descends about 825m. Here they watch the active mining process.

The McGregor Museum

This was originally a sanatorium where Cecil Rhodes lived during the siege of Kimberley. It includes a look at frontier history out of which a quite different South Africa would have emerged had it not been for the finding of diamonds and gold.

Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre

This is one of South Africa’s premier public rock engraving sites. It boasts displays, a movie and an audio walking tour over the site. Guided tours are offered to other rock art sites in the region.

Duggan Cronin Photo Gallery

Depicting indigenous cultures and lifestyles, some 8 000 photographs of labourers recruited from South African tribal people taken by mine manager Irishman AM Duggan Cronin, between 1919 and 1939.

Kimberley Ghost Trail

Heart-stopping facts about ghostly visitations in the Diamond City are revealed during an entertaining guided night time tour of Kimberley. Visit the haunted corners of a city that was plagued by war and mine disasters.

Magersfontein Battlefield

Its original gun positions, trenches and other defences intact, this is the site of a major battle, where between 1899 and 1902 12 000 British troops and 8 200 Boers were entrenched at Magersfontein. The museum preserves 400ha of the terrain and displays uniforms, equipment, weapons, documents and photographs from both armies.

William Humphreys Art Gallery

The gallery encompasses a representative collection of South African painting, as well as fine examples of 17th Century Dutch, Flemish, English and French Schools.
